Abstract: | This thesis studies the manifestation of conversational gender dominance in mixed dyadic conversations of Master 1 EFL students at Echahid Cheick Larbi University Tebessi, with emphasis on the occurrence of interruptions. The study aims to examine the frequency of production of interruptions in male and female participants and the interpretation of their two fundamental functional categories, which are cooperative and competitive interruptions. This study was carried out on 12 participants from the aforementioned population; they were matched for form 6 dyads and each dyad consisted of a male and a female. The participants were recorded using smartphones while they discussed debatable topics of their choosing; their productions were analyzed qualitatively and qualitatively as part of a quote description. A certain number of results were obtained following the statistical analysis of the results. The main results indicate that men, overall, produced more interruptions than women and that most of their interruptions were produced in a manner competitive with the aim of dominating conversations. In addition, the majority of interruptions of cooperation were produced by women, while men seemed to perform one significantly lower number. |
