Abstract

Abstract : This study examines the dialectical relationship between reality and mythology in contemporary Chinese fantasy cinema, taking the animated film Ne Zha: Birth of the Demon Child (2019) as its primary analytical model. The study draws on three complementary theoretical frameworks: Roland Barthes’ semiology to analyze visual signifying systems, Michel Chion’s concept of the Acousmêtre to investigate the auditory dimension as an independent semiological system, and C. Wright Mills’ sociological imagination to interpret the identity transformation of the character Ne Zha within its broader social structural context. The study employs a semiological methodology to deconstruct the film’s audiovisual content across nine selected scenes, aiming to uncover the symbolic and ideological systems embedded in its narrative and visual structure. The study concludes that Ne Zha transcends its entertainment function to operate as a cultural and ideological discourse that interrogates social structures and deconstructs mechanisms of power across their cosmic, social, and familial dimensions. The analysis demonstrates that mythology in this film is not deployed as a static cultural heritage, but rather as a living signifying system that reproduces social reality and naturalizes what is historically constructed. The audiovisual analysis reveals that the system of cosmic fate exercises its dominance through the mechanism of organized sonic absence, consistent with Chion’s concept of the Acousmêtre. Furthermore, the application of Mills’ sociological imagination establishes that Ne Zha’s identity transformation unfolds across three successive stages: unconscious submission to an imposed identity, a revelatory crisis that exposes the sociohistorical nature of what appeared as cosmic fate, and finally a moment of conscious choice through which the subject redefines itself beyond imposed classifications. These findings position the film as a singular cinematic model of fantasy operating as a social laboratory for identity reconstruction and the deconstruction of dominant structures.
