Abstract

This study aims to investigate the pragmatic dimensions of Algerian political media discourse, taking the speeches of Amar Bendjama at the United Nations Security Council on the Gaza War (2023–2024) as a model for analysis and examination. The study seeks to uncover the mechanisms through which Algerian diplomatic discourse employed pragmatic linguistic tools to highlight the speech act, reference frameworks, and active forces within the discourse, in addition to the strategies used to establish both surface and deep meanings, as well as argumentation and persuasion strategies.
To achieve these objectives, the study adopted the descriptive-analytical method by analyzing a sample of ten speeches delivered by Amar Bendjama at the Security Council concerning the Gaza War. The analysis relied on discourse analysis tools within Teun A. van Dijk’s approach, alongside the Agenda-Setting Theory and Media Framing Theory, in order to reveal the intentional meaning of the discourse through the relationship between vocabulary and wording.
The study reached several findings, the most important of which are: the central conceptual network was based on the positive representation of the self through Algeria’s voice, and the negative representation of the other, namely the occupation. The discourse also reflected a shift from traditional procedural diplomacy to proactive diplomacy through three pragmatic dimensions of several concepts that highlighted the emotional aspect of the discourse, particularly through words conveying a form of field-based description.
The study further demonstrated that the reference frameworks emerged during periodic sessions within a strategic framework aimed at employing a rhetorical language that, for the first time, adopted a humanitarian perspective toward the events in Gaza. This humanitarian framing was linked to an economic framework expressing the extent of destruction in Gaza through a framework of direct responsibility, which in turn revealed a conflict framework based on questions pointing to contradictions within the principles of moral frameworks. Consequently, the discourse balanced respect, moral stance, and diplomatic performance, while confining active forces to being not merely textual structures but also political practices aimed at consolidating power relations through clear and direct surface meanings using strong and influential words. At the same time, the discourse conveyed deeper meanings through the language of obligation intended to address the global conscience through the value of words. Thus, the structure of the discourse was shown to be a blend of law, ethics, and a social and historical context reflecting identity-based diplomacy.
