Abstract
This study addresses the theme of "Religiosity and Deviance – A Socio-Deviance Study of Value Contradiction" within the community of Bir El Ater. Our research focuses on the contradiction between adherence to religious values and engagement in deviant behaviors.
Unlike conventional approaches to deviance, this study examines the phenomenon from a sociological perspective, focusing on individuals who practice religiosity and genuinely believe in religious values, yet deviate from them in certain situations. The study interprets this contradiction as the outcome of pressures exerted by the collective conscience, the individuals' desire to conform and integrate into their social group, or the influence exerted by the group over their behavior.
To conduct this research, we adopted a qualitative descriptive approach. A semi-structured interview was employed as the primary data-gathering tool to allow for in-depth exploration of the subject. The sample consisted of ten individuals (both male and female) drawn from the study community as defined within the city of Bir El Ater. Content analysis technique was utilized to process the collected data and reach the findings, which revealed that:
* Religious behavior does not serve the abstract value, but rather follows the logic of individual interest and collective loyalty, creating a gap between what is declared (the value) and what is practiced (the behavior).
* Collective coercion manifested in the dimension of prayer, where the results showed that apparent behavior is a response to social coercion rather than an expression of internal commitment.
* The duality of conformity and deviance was distributed across four fundamental values (solidarity, earning/profit, religious rituals, and commanding good and forbidding evil), confirming that contradiction is a structural feature of religious practice, not an exception.
* Religiosity in its four dimensions (affective, ritualistic, behavioral, and affiliative) is neither pure conformity nor pure deviance, but rather a dialectical context that combines both, resulting from the interaction between the self, the community, and the sacred text.
