This thesis presents a study of the crankshaft manufacturing process at ETRAG Company in Constantine, along with its metallurgical and mechanical characterization. The crankshaft is a key component of the internal combustion engine, subjected to significant mechanical loads that require high strength, toughness, and durability. The objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of the different manufacturing stages (forging, machining, and heat treatments) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the component. Metallographic observations revealed the transformation of the initial ferrite-pearlite structure into tempered sorbite after quenching and tempering treatment, followed by the formation of tempered martensite on the surface after induction hardening. Mechanical testing demonstrated a significant improvement in material performance, with an ultimate tensile strength of 878 MPa, a yield strength of 535 MPa, and an increase in average impact toughness from 11.8 to 28 J/cm². Microhardness measurements showed a highly hardened surface layer (59–62 HRC) combined with a tougher core. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the manufacturing process implemented at ETRAG and highlight the importance of heat treatments in optimizing the performance and service life of the crankshaft.
